Topic: Engaging k-12 Teachers in Project-based Learning Strategies for Classroom Environments

Module 1: Planning the Multimedia Workshop

Topic: Engaging k-12 teachers in project-based learning (PBL) strategies for their classroom environments.

Population: The population will consist of 16 teachers from grades 9-12.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, the intended audience will:

  • Define the term project-based learning.

  • Identify and implement three strategies for classroom environments.

  • Develop a basic understanding of the eight essential elements of project-based learning.

  • Collaboratively and effectively work in small groups settings.

  • Organize your materials and resources into a coherent structure.

  • Integrate prior knowledge into your project-based learning activity.

Gap:

What do you think your participants already know?

The participants will already know how to incorporate technology in their classroom environment.

What do you want them to learn?

I want the participants to learn how to incorporate multimedia instruction and learning in their classroom setting using effective PBL strategies.

What is the gap?

The problem is that these teachers are using various strategies to incorporate multimedia instruction and learning; however, there is a lack of effective strategies used for PBL.

In order to close the gap, teachers will be provided with project-based learning strategies and elements that they can incorporate into any classroom or online curricula.

Module 2: Devise a Plan

1. Authentic Assessment Activity:

In this workshop, participants will be provided with an opportunity to determine whether the school cafeteria concept can be changed to enable outside businesses to come in and set up a food court. Participants will work together implementing the project-based learning concept which includes three strategies and eight essential elements for completing this workshop. The participants will be divided into small groups in order to communicate, collaborate, use critical thinking skills, and present their multimedia project using a Web 2.0 tool which is a wiki. Participants will use two rubrics: one for the product created in the authentic assessment activity, and one for evaluating the effectiveness of the workshop.

2. Presentation:

The participants will have basic to advanced skills in using multimedia technology in this workshop. In order to engage all participants, the workshop will start with an introduction of what is project-based learning. Students will be provided with a graphic organizer entitled: KWL Strategy. Then later follow by brief videos, which will be presented in parts on the eight elements (strategies) for incorporating project-based learning. For participants, to apply their new and prior knowledge and skills, students will be given the appropriate time to complete their authentic assessment activity.

3. Graphic Organizer:

The graphic organizer will be used to help participants actively engage and focus their attention on the key points in the presentation.

4. Pre-Training:

The pretraining for this workshop will begin by addressing the following questions:
What is project-based learning? What are three strategies for project-based learning? There are 16 participants divided into four groups consisting of four individuals.
